How We Built Companions That Do Not Sound Like Everyone Else
The hardest part was never making a chat reply. Anything can reply. The hard part is making six characters who still sound like themselves in month three, when the easy small talk is gone and the conversation has to survive on personality alone. Early on we had a version where all of them drifted toward the same agreeable voice within about forty messages, and it felt like talking to a very polite hotel receptionist wearing different photographs.

Those refusals turned out to matter more than any list of hobbies, because a person is mostly defined by where they stop, and a character with no edges reads as a service rather than someone you know.
We also stopped chasing perfect answers. Real conversation is full of half-thoughts, corrections and jokes that miss. When we allowed for a bit of mess, testers stayed twice as long and, more tellingly, started arguing with their companions. Nobody argues with a search box.
